So yet another mass shooting has happened. This one at a bank in Louisville, KY. This of course comes on the heels of the terrible shooting at Covenant School in Nashville. Over the years I’ve seen a lot of people try to explain one or another unfortunate event by saying “everything happens for a reason.” This is just another way of saying “God works in mysterious ways.” If they were honest with themselves, they’d just admit that they have no clue why some random event took place. But people, Christians especially, have this need to assign agency to every little thing (or big thing) that happens in their lives. If it’s a good thing they want a god to thank for it. If it’s a bad thing they want to think there’s a “reason” for it. Continue reading

So it’s election time. Predictably, our politicians and the media are making fools of themselves with outlandish claims and impossible predictions. Each party accuses the other of being the enemy of democracy. Personally, I think both are correct. Regardless of which party wins, we stand to lose in some ways and gain in others. Continue reading

I guess everyone has their favorite customer service nightmare story. I’ve had a few over the years. Had a few good ones as well. I made a few changes in my cellular plan last year with AT&T that went smoothly. And I recently started home Internet service with T-Mobile and have been very well pleased with the interactions I’ve had with them. And GEICO is always a pleasure to deal with. Crisp and efficient.

Oh, joy. I’m in Facebook Jail yet again. And as before it’s for the most ridiculous of reasons. Once again the meddlesome juvenile delinquents FB employs as moderators have taken offense at something that could not possibly be offensive. Please allow me to set the stage here: I have a good friend in Central Texas. We’ll just call her “Ann.” I’ve known her and her brother since the early 70s. Once again, America’s most contentious issue raises its ugly head: Abortion. It divides communities and even families against one another. It is, simply put, the most glaring example of what can happen in a free nation when the rights of two people come into conflict. In this case, the rights of a woman and her unborn child.
I hadn’t planned to blog today. I’ve posted a lot of stuff here lately and apparently it wasn’t very good. But then a few of my friends posted some really bizarre stuff online and I felt the need to answer. More of the “we’re screwed without God” stuff.
