About Alan Burkhart

I consider myself a free thinker and as such, I'm skeptical of just about everything. I've discovered over the years that the truth is often found in the unlikeliest of places. I don't claim to be an expert on anything. But I do enjoy sharing my thoughts. Your thoughts are of course welcome as well.

Fishing At The Gin Pond

Since retiring recently, I’ve been reminiscing (like old folks do) about my younger days. And I’ve been thinking about how different it was to be a kid back then (I’m 65) compared to the present. Invariably when I have these thoughts I end up thinking about my maternal grandparents, Fred and Autie. They were two of the sweetest, wisest people I’ve ever known although I was too immature back then to fully appreciate that fact. Continue reading

Things We Fight About

Photo Credit: David Erickson (link below post)

As a middle-of-the-road kind of guy, at times I feel like I am surrounded by nut-jobs of every stripe. Far-left, far-right, religious zealots, hateful anti-theists, anarchists, anti-capitalists, etc etc etc. The list is endless. And me? I just wanna get through the day with as little drama as possible. I’ve been an Atheist most of my life, but it wasn’t something I announced to the world. I didn’t become vocal until the Christian right became so determined to inflict their mental poison upon our schools, our legal system, and our culture in general. Continue reading

Boys Will Be Boys…Until They’re Not

GENDER

Either of the two divisions, designated female and male, by which most organisms are classified on the basis of their reproductive organs and functions; sex.

The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, 5th Edition.

I am amazed at the absurdities I’m seeing from both the Left and the Right. How did humanity get to a point in which gender is a matter of preference? Continue reading

Absurdity, Insanity, Or Both?

I am so tired of American Christians and their self-important nonsense. If they’d actually study their bibles instead of just assuming everything their pastors tell them is true, they’d likely reach the same conclusion that I reached years ago. The Bible is a book of filth, violence, misogyny and vulgarity. And most importantly, there’s little truth to be found within it. One only needs apply bit of common sense to most of the Bible’s stories to see just how impossible they are.

Two Sides To Every Fence

I was fussing about this a few days ago, but I’m gonna fuss a little more. Christians constantly post stuff on social media about how great their god is. And that’s fine. They have that right and I support it. But if a non-believer should make a comment on that post in disagreement, no matter how polite, the believers often respond with indignation or outright arrogance (“My god is the ONE TRUE GOD OF THE BIBLE!!!”). Humanity Is A Failed Species

I make no claims of being a sage or any sort of expert. But based upon what I have observed over the last few decades, I honestly believe humanity is a failed species. We are self-destructing at an amazing rate and that rate appears to be accelerating. It’s only matter of time before nature shrugs its powerful shoulders and we vanish as if we never existed. Why such a negative prognosis? Let’s take a look…

So Many Contractions, So Little Time

People are losing their command (if they ever had it) of the English language. Even global publications that have professional EDITORS are getting sloppy with all manner of mistakes (there / they’re / their, then / than, fill / feel, etc). It’s most evident on social media. For some reason people (especially young people) feel free when on social media to just butcher the language (e.g. “Imma gon bust yo ass mofo”). Continue reading

Growing Up Normal Wasn’t So Bad

Growing up in the 70s, the family gun storage was my bedroom. There were at least a dozen guns, lots of ammo and several knives. Unlocked and within easy reach. There were several .22s including a semi-auto, three shotguns, a .303, a 30-30, a 7.62mm Mosin-Nagant, a .45 Colt service revolver, a matched pair of .32 revolvers, two .22 revolvers, a diver’s knife, my throwing knife, an antique dagger, and a couple of bayonets.
