The data presented below is strictly for comparison between states. Whatever conclusions you might draw are strictly your own. I crunched the numbers to satisfy my own curiosity about a couple of things that come up on the news and in debates from time to time. Continue reading

Sometimes, The Republicans Are The Jackasses
Well here we go again. Christians are once more seeking to worm their doctrine into our public schools. This time it’s in Arkansas. State Representatives Mary Bentley (R) and Gary Stubblefield (R) have sponsored a bill (HB 1701) to allow teachers the option of teaching Creationism to K-12 students as a theory. It’s passed in the State House on a strict party line vote and as of this writing is awaiting a vote in the State Senate. Continue reading
Teacher Or Preacher?
Here we go again. Yet another public school teacher who thinks her religion gives her license to break the law. It’s stuff like this that sits at the heart of my belief that young children must be protected from religion until they’re old enough to think critically on their own. But supposed purveyors of piety know how much easier it is to twist the mind of a child than an adult. As such they continue to shamelessly worm their way into our schools. Continue reading
Memo To Evangelicals
Out Of Order
One of the most obvious untruths in the Christian Bible can be found at the very beginning. If one compares the Genesis creation story to scientific fact, the whole thing just falls apart. What becomes obvious is that the Bible was not divinely inspired by a Creator. Why? Because the order of events is all wrong, and the laws of physics are laughably violated. There is an order to how things work in the cosmos. And like it or not, it’s how things have to work. If the Bible was divinely inspired by the god who created the universe, then it would have an accurate account of that creation. It does not, and therefore the Bible cannot be divinely inspired unless God is either incompetent or an outright liar. Let’s take a day-by-day look at what Genesis (KJV) has to say, compared to how we know “Creation” had to have occurred. Continue reading
How Will You Spend Eternity?
Have you ever thought about how you’ll spend eternity? I don’t mean Heaven or Hell, but rather how you’d spend your time in Heaven? Eternity is an awfully long time. I’ve been thinking back to some of the descriptions I was given of Heaven when I was a kid and also of what others have said about it as time has gone by. Continue reading
Mental Midgetry
America is heading down a dangerous road. I’m not talking about Socialism or Anarchy (yeah, those are bad too). I’m referring to our free-fall into ignorance. Far too many Americans are rejecting obvious facts in favor of what they want to believe. They’ll reject a beneficial scientific discovery because they think it conflicts with their religious beliefs. They reject common sense precautions against Covid-19 because they’ve been deluded into thinking their rights are being violated. We reject vaccines because some goofball on youtube strings together a bunch of unrelated information. We are becoming a nation of people unwilling or unable to think outside the box. I find myself torn between wanting to help fight the tidal wave of stupidity or just giving up.
Preaching To A Choir Of One
More and more, I’m seeing memes on social media from Christians about how “God is in control.” And the more out of control the world becomes, the more they insist otherwise. At some point, true believers are going to have to face the truth: No, God isn’t in control because He doesn’t exist. Or if He does exist, they need to fire Him and hire a more competent deity to govern their fate.
The Great Human Disconnect Of The 21st Century
More and more Americans are becoming disconnected from reality. Does anyone recall the USA ever being in such a mess? Violent civil unrest, unwarranted attacks on innocent people, rampant conspiracy theories, looting and rioting and more. We’ve had civil unrest in the past, and not all of it bad. Women, blacks and gays all had to fight for equality in a nation dominated by old white men reluctant to give up their stranglehold on American society. They won, and that’s a good thing. We’re supposed to be a free nation. But… We might be free but we’re certainly not united.Continue reading
Covid-19: Spin Vs. Fact

The Bible Belt
I’m seeing some really hateful rhetoric spewing out of the various secular online communities, much of it directed at the Bible Belt. As an atheist and a resident of Mississippi, I expect better from my contemporaries.
