The Gulf Of WTF

OK let me preface this by saying I am not a Trump hater, and neither am I a mindless MAGA person. I’m an American. I care about my country and I want what logic and common sense dictate is best for her. That said…

Trump is doing some good things. I like the idea of DOGE pointing out those who waste our money. I like the fact that he’s speaking up and working to advance our interests abroad. I’m proud of his work to push for peace in Israel and Ukraine. I love his tough, no-BS policies concerning our southern border.

I am not happy about some of his other actions; like the way he disrespected Canada and Greenland, or his threats regarding the Panama Canal. Yes, we should have retained control of the canal. But we did not. It is not Trump’s place to try to unilaterally take it back. Trump’s own mouth may well be his worst enemy.

But of all the crazy things he’s done and said, nothing else disgusts me like his renaming of the Gulf of Mexico. This is by far the most pointless and laughable action of any US president within my lifetime. Does this somehow benefit Americans? No, it doesn’t. Groceries are still too expensive. Gasoline prices are ridiculous. Buying or renting a home remains well out of reach for many Americans. But he goes out and renames the Gulf and brags like he’s saved the nation from some dark fate.

It is not his place to do such a thing on his own. America does not own the Gulf. It doesn’t just border our nation. Did anyone ask Mexico or Cuba what they thought of the idea? It’s their gulf, too after all. And then Google just sucks up to Trump and changes their maps. As of this writing, Apple has not. But they probably will.

There is, as I said above, no point to this. This is nothing more than Donald Trump jerking off his over-inflated ego. And the mindless MAGAs are all out there dancing to his tune as if it’s some sort of brilliant move. The way some on the right are behaving you’d think he’d just conquered the world.

At this point I must wonder what the next four years will bring. Trump does not respect those with non-Christian beliefs. He’s still very much a Republican and that means we’re in for a lot of blatant rich boy cronyism. He’s made some conciliatory moves where the less fortunate are concerned but it isn’t nearly enough. Time will tell.
